SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Three members of the Wake Forest men's tennis team -- Skander Mansouri, Matt Erdman and Brendan Henry -- have been named ITA Scholar-Athlete award recipients while the program as a whole earned ITA All-Academic team honors, the organization announced Thursday.
"At its core, college tennis is about higher education. And, our sport has always been a leader when it comes to high performing scholar-athletes," said Timothy Russell, Chief Executive Officer of the ITA, in the organization's announcement of the honors. "This group represents the best of the best, as do their coaches who regularly serve as such great teachers and mentors of our sport's finest young people. Hearty and well-deserved congratulations coupled with loud cheers go out to all of these superstars of intercollegiate athletics."
In order to earn Scholar-Athlete honors, a player has to be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale for the current academic year and have been enrolled at his present school for at least two semesters.
Mansouri, a rising sophomore who has not yet declared a major, posted a 15-11 singles record primarily at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, but was spectacular in doubles with Christian Seraphim. Through the season, the two went 21-9 together and finished the year ranked No. 15 in the country and No. 1 in the Carolina Region. He was also named to the All-ACC Academic team last month.
Throughout the season, Erdman posted a 7-1 record, including a 5-1 mark in tournament action. In doubles play, he posted an overall 5-3 mark, including a 3-0 record in dual matches. Like Mansouri, Erdman has not yet declared a major.
Henry, who is a rising senior and Mathematical Business major, went 2-2 in singles action and 1-0 in doubles play throughout the course of the 2014-15 season.
Wake Forest finished the year with a record-breaking 24 victories. The program reached just its third Sweet 16 ever, all since 2007, while finishing as the ACC Championship runner-up to nine-time defending champion Virginia.
