WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest women's tennis head coach Jeff Wyshner announced his team's 2015-16 schedule on Thursday. The Demon Deacons' are scheduled to participate in seven fall tournaments before completing a 27-match spring slate looking to improve on last season's winning campaign, the first for the Deacs since 2007.
Through the spring schedule, Wake Forest will take on 11 teams that went to the NCAA Championship a season ago, seven of which reached the Sweet 16. Of the 27 matches scheduled, 14 of them will come against opponents that finished ranked in the ITA Top 75 at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season with six of them against teams that finished in the Top 20.
"The spring schedule includes what might be the toughest conference schedule in the country, but we are excited to add matches against a couple SEC opponents in Tennessee and South Carolina," Wyshner said of the spring slate. "We'll also be going up to Michigan to play a couple matches near the home of one of our seniors, Kasey Gardiner. Playing near each player's hometown is something we try to do for each player on the team at some point during their four years at Wake Forest."
The non-conference spring schedule includes home matches against College of Charleston and Winthrop to open the season on Jan. 18, as well as contests against Elon, Furman, UNCG, South Carolina, Appalachian State and East Carolina. On the road in non-conference play are contests against Tennessee, VCU, William & Mary, Michigan State and Eastern Michigan.
With 14 ACC matchups this year, the Demon Deacons will host Louisville, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Duke, Miami and Florida State. Throughout the course of the year, the Deacs will travel to Clemson, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Boston College and NC State. Last season, Wake Forest earned conference wins over Louisville, Pittsburgh, NC State and Syracuse in winning the most ACC contests to date during the Wyshner era.
The upcoming fall schedule includes five trips out of the state of North Carolina with appearances in the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Tennessee Invite in Knoxville and potentially the Charleston ITF 10K in South Carolina and Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California. The two tournaments in the state include the annual Wake Forest Invitational, which is set for Oct. 9-11, and the ITA Carolina Regionals in Chapel Hill from Oct. 22-26.
"The fall tournament schedule should be a little more challenging this year without a doubt," Wyshner said. "We're excited about playing a strong event at Harvard, the possibility of taking some players to both the All-American and to the Charleston 10K, and a great hidden dual event at Tennessee where we will get to play against Ohio State, Arizona State and Tennessee."
This year's ACC Championship is set for April 20-24 in Cary, North Carolina, and the NCAA Championships will start with first-round action on May 6. This year's NCAA Team, Singles and Doubles Championships will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
