DURHAM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-22) in its first ACC match of the season against in-state foe Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium Wednesday night. The loss dropped the Demon Deacons' 2015 record to 8-5. The Blue Devils improved to 6-5.
Duke claimed a back-and-forth opening set in which neither team could gain a lead of more than three points. The Deacs negated an early 4-1 deficit and eventually led 21-19 in the set, but the Blue Devils sealed a 1-0 overall lead with a 6-2 run following a timeout.
Brianna Lynch paced the Deacs by posting six of her nine kills for the evening on a .462 hitting percentage, while Rachel Burau put up 11 assists. There were 12 ties and four lead changes.
The second set saw Duke seize an early 9-2 lead. Wake Forest battled back to within three points on multiple occasions, but was never able to make it closer than that, falling 25-19.
Behind 2-0 coming out of the intermission, the Deacons earned their largest lead of the night, starting the third set with a 12-7 advantage. The Blue Devils, however, reeled off six points in a row before going on to take the set, 25-22.
ACC kills leader Kylie Long registered a team-best 14 kills in the match, while Katie Moore had a hand in four of Wake Forest's eight blocks. Caroline Wolf padded her conference lead in digs with 15.
The Deacons will look to snap a five-match losing streak to the Blue Devils when they meet again on Oct. 28 at Reynolds Gymnasium.
Wake Forest resumes conference action Saturday when it comes home to face Virginia. The Deacons continue a 15-match stretch of games in the state of North Carolina the following weekend when they face N.C. State and North Carolina on the road.
