ELON, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2015 season Friday evening at the Elon Open. The Demon Deacons women were victorious and the men finished runner-up as they competed against Elon, High Point and UNC Greensboro in the four-team meet at the Elon Cross Country Course.

In the women's race, Wake Forest won the meet with 33 points, finishing ahead of Elon, who had 41 points. High Point was the men's winner with 28 points, edging the Demon Deacons' 46 points.

The women had mostly newcomers in action at the meet, including three freshmen that finished in the top six. Elizabeth Parrish crossed third place in a time of 15:06 for the 4K race to lead the Demon Deacons. She crossed just ahead of teammates Meredith Smith and Jenna Truedson in fourth and sixth, respectively. Junior Gabrielle Merritt was eighth and freshman Isabelle Harouche was 11th to score for Wake Forest.

The men had a mixture of veterans and newcomers competing and were led by junior Simon Holden's second-place finish. He finished the 6K course in 18:34, one second behind Elon's Nick Ciolkowski. Freshman Nicholas Raefski and junior Alex Giacco also had top-10 finishes, crossing in ninth and 10th, respectively. Senior Evan Little and freshman Craig Corti rounded out the scoring five with 12th and 13th place finishes, while freshman Connor Buck followed in 14th place in his collegiate debut.

The Demon Deacons will have the full squads in action for the first time on Sept. 12 when they travel to Greenville, S.C., for the Furman Cross Country Classic.
