Deacs Win Six Events at Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- In their first meet since Dec. 5, the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams combined for six titles and 14 top-three finishes at the 2016 Wake Forest Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem on Saturday.
Alexander Giacco won the men's 3,000m, Charlie Ionata won his second-straight weight throw competition, Michael Cyphers won the men's pole vault, Max Adams took the men's shot put title, Jordan Banks was victorious in the women's long jump and Alexandria Florent triumphed in her collegiate debut in the high jump.
Additionally, freshman Alva Hicks placed second in the women's weight throw, breaking her own school record with a toss of 18.49m.
Giacco set the standard in the 3,000m with a time of 8:42.34, edging out teammate Craig Corti, who came in at 8:46.48 in his first appearance as a Deacon in track and field.
Ionata, who broke his previous personal weight throw record at the JDL Kick-Off Classic in December, did so again on Saturday with a mark of 19.65m. Teammate Kyle Johnson came in second place in the event. Rounding out the men's winners were Adams with a distance of 14.67m in the shot put, and Cyphers, who recorded a 4.70m mark in the pole vault. Fellow Deac Luke Annichiarico followed in third at 4.55m.
In her first meet of the season, Banks was the lone women's long jumper to break the five-meter mark at 5.03m. Wearing the Old Gold and Black for the first time, Florent used a 1.70m leap in the high jump to take first place.
Joining Corti, Johnson and Hicks as runner-up finishers at the meet for the Demon Deacons were John Archie in the men's 600m and Tesia Kempski in the women's pole vault.
Next week, Wake Forest will compete outside of Winston-Salem for the first time this season when it heads to the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. The Deacs then return close to home for the Camel City Invitational.
Alexander Krall from the men's team and Amy Collins from the women's team will take part in the JDL Combined Events on Sunday and Monday.
