Wake Forest Opens 2016 Against Cougars, Eagles
The Demon Deacons open 2016 looking to improve on last year's winning campaign, welcoming College of Charleston and Winthrop to the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The matches are the first two of a 27-match regular season schedule.
Revisiting 2015
Under the guidance of Jeff Wyshner, Wake Forest earned its first winning season since 2006-07 with a 14-13 record.
In Wyshner's fifth season, the Deacs continued their program turnaround by winning the most ACC matches (four) since winning four ACC contests during the 2009-10 campaign.
Kimmy Guerin finished the season ranked No. 118 in the ITA National Rankings while checking in at No. 12 in the Carolina Region for singles. She and Gardiner placed 10th overall in the Carolina Region for doubles.
Overall, the Deacs finished the season ranked No. 5 in the Carolina Region, up one spot from a No. 6 finish in 2014.
Looking Ahead to 2016
This season, Wake Forest will take on 11 programs that went to the 2015 NCAA Championship. Of those 11 teams, eight of them will be in ACC play.
Fifteen of the 27 matches this season will be played at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, including four of the first five overall and a season-long five-match homestand from Feb. 26 to March 5.
This year's ACC Championship will be played April 20-24 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. before the NCAA Championship starts May 13.
The first two rounds of the NCAA Championship will be played at campus sites before the tournament converges on Tulsa, Okla. on May 19.
Deacs in the Rankings
Following a strong fall season, Wake Forest women's tennis checked in at No. 71 in the ITA Preseason Rankings.
The doubles duo of Andrea Retolaza Andrade and Luisa Fernandez also rank No. 51 in the doubles preseason poll. They are also No. 7 in the Carolina Region.
Anna Ulyashchenko (No. 8), Emma Davis (No. 11) and Samantha Asch (No. 17) are ranked in singles in the Carolina Region. The Deacs' three regionally ranked players (top 20 in each region) is a first for the team since the ITA went from eight to 12 regions in 2009-2010.
100 Wins
Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner have both already won 100 or more matches combined in singles and doubles in their careers. Gardiner is currently at 111, while Zhang is at 109.
As of the beginning of the spring season, 37 Demon Deacons have reached that milestone.
The next closest to 100-career wins is junior Kimmy Guerin with 87. Fellow juniors Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernandez have 81 apiece.
New Faces to the Program
Based on rankings by Tennis Recruiting Network, Wake Forest added its best class in program history last summer with Emma Davis, Anna Ulyashchenko and Joanna Zalewski.
Davis led the team with 12 singles wins during fall action while both Ulyashchenko and Zalewski each picked up eight victories. Earning 28 of Wake Forest's 69 wins in the fall, the three freshmen combined for nearly 41 percent of Wake Forest's wins during tournament action.
Up Next
Next weekend, Wake Forest goes on the road to No. 61 Tennessee on Jan. 23 for a matchup at 11 a.m. against the Volunteers before returning home the following weekend for contests against Elon and Furman.
