By Wake Forest Athletic Communications (@WakeMGolf)PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Wake Forest men's golf team split a pair of matches Monday during the first day of the Cypress Point Classic, a team match play event at the prestigious Cypress Point Golf Course. The Demon Deacons suffered an opening round loss to UCLA before defeating Alabama in their second match of the day.
The tournament uses a format where each individual match is worth four team points, two points for the overall winner, one point for the front nine winner and one point for the back nine winner. The first round featured four-ball competition, the second round featured foursomes and Tuesday's third round will feature singles matches.
"This tournament is a great experience on a wonderful course," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The morning matches came down to the last few holes and both teams played well, but we came up just short. In the afternoon, we played very well in our match against Alabama. We learned a lot today about match play and are looking forward to playing Cal in singles play tomorrow."
The Demon Deacons, seeded second at the tournament, were upset in the morning four-ball by seventh-seeded UCLA, 7.5-4.5. Eric Bae and Will Zalatoris split their match, 2-2, with Cole Madey and Spencer Soosman. Lee Detmer and Cameron Young also split their match, 2-2, playing against Matt Hutchins and Hidetoshi Yoshihara. UCLA's Tyler Collier and Patrick Murphy topped Paul McBride and Clancy Waugh 3.5-0.5 to give UCLA their margin of victory.
In the afternoon, Wake Forest posted a 10-2 victory over sixth-seeded Alabama in the foursome competition. Zalatoris and Bae downed Davis Riley and Lee Hodges, 4-0 to lead the Demon Deacons. Waugh and McBride posted a 3-1 victory over Tyler Hitchner and Josh Sedeno. Young and Detmer also recorded a 3-1 win, topping Steven Setterstrom and Robby Prater.
The Demon Deacons conclude the event and their fall schedule Tuesday with singles match play as they play Cal. Each of the six players will compete in a singles match.
