CLEMSON, S.C. –
The 43rd-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2016 season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 5-2 decision in its ACC opener to No. 21 Clemson outdoors at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C.

The loss snapped the Demon Deacons' season-opening, nine-match win streak that set a program record, leaving their record at 9-1, including an 0-1 mark in the conference. The Tigers improved to 3-3, including 2-0 in the league. The contest was the Deacons' first that wasn't played indoors this season.

Clemson gained an early advantage by staking claim to the doubles point. Tristen Dewar and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov started the afternoon off with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz secured the first point of the match for the Tigers by coming out on top, 6-4, at the third spot.

Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko erased a 3-0 deficit at No. 1 and were tied at five when the match was stopped.

The Deacs got back into the match in singles when Luisa Fernandez raced out to a 6-1 win in her first set and finished of Ruiz in straight sets with a 6-2 win in the second frame. Joanna Zalewski gave Wake Forest the lead with a triumph at No. 4. She downed Miller-Krasilnikov, 7-5, 6-3, to improved to 10-0 in singles on the dual match season.

To level the match, Clemson's Ayan Broomfield negated a first-set loss to Guerin at the top position to hand the No. 77-ranked Demon Deacon junior her first loss of the spring, making it 2-2.

From there, the Tigers won out, taking a lead when Dewar won consecutive set tiebreakers to defeat Samantha Asch at No. 5. The hosts sealed the team win when No. 75-ranked Fernanda Navarro battled back to defeat No. 103 Davis in a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1), at No. 2.

Eidukonyte, ranked 11th nationally, gave Clemson a fifth point by upending Ulyashchenko, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 slot.

Wake Forest is now 3-1 on the year against ranked opponents. All four of those matches were played on the road.

The Deacs will return to Winston-Salem to kick off a four-match homestand against Louisville next Friday at 2 p.m. Next Friday's 6 p.m. match against UNC-Greensboro was cancelled. The team will also host No. 37 South Carolina next Sunday.
