WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The 27th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team picked up its first conference win of the season, defeating Louisville, 6-1, indoors at the Wake Forest Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons improved to 10-1 on the year and leveled their ACC record at 1-1. The Cardinals dropped to 6-5 and 0-3 in league competition.
The doubles competition was tightly contested in the early going, but the Deacons emerged with wins on all three courts. Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko were the first to finish, holding off Abbie Pahz and Ariana Rodriguez at No. 1 by a score of 6-4.
Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade locked down the first point of the match by doubling up Jessie Paul and Elle Stokes, 6-3, at No. 3 and Emma Davis and Samantha Asch completed the sweep by taking the No. 2 spot by the same score.
In singles, Davis wasted little time padding the Deacs' lead, blanking Ola Mally, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Fernandez put Wake Forest on the brink of victory with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Boesing at the No. 6 spot.
Ulyashchenko clinched the win by dispatching Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-3, in the third flight. The freshman improved to 8-3 on the spring.
Joanna Zalewski upped her spring singles record to 11-0 by taking down Stokes, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 position. The Linden, N.J. native has won 13-straight matches dating back to the fall season. After suffering her first singles loss of the spring last week at Clemson, the 82nd-ranked Guerin got back in the win column and made it 6-0 with a 10-7 match tiebreaker win over Sena Suswam at No. 1.
The final singles contest to finish was No. 5, where Asch dropped two 6-4 sets to Pahz.
The Deacs are now 2-1 all-time against Louisville after defeating the Cardinals 6-1 last season.
Wake Forest will be back in action on Sunday against 17th-ranked South Carolina at 2 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The Demon Deacons cap a four-match homestand next Saturday when they host Virginia Tech and Appalachian State.
