Wake Forest took advantage of a strong effort from the bullpen and timely hitting in a 7-4 victory over Davidson on Tuesday evening at David F. Couch Ballpark.
Demon Deacon (4-0) relievers combined to toss 6.2 innings, allowing just one run while striking out four. Christian Bartholomew threw 2.0 scoreless frames to earn the win, while John McCarren, Chris Farish and Will Craig also tossed at least one scoreless inning.
Though the Deacs were just 6-for-28 on the day, hitters were 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position and drew nine walks in the winning effort.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Kevin Conway walked, stole second and scored on a ground-rule double by Jonathan Pryor.
Then, Joey Rodriguez and Johnny Aiello also walked, setting up a bases-clearing double by Craig, which put the Deacs ahead, 5-3.
Gavin Sheets accounted for the final two Wake Forest runs, hitting a solo blast in the sixth and driving home Stuart Fairchild in the eighth.
Davidson (2-2) was threatening in the ninth. With one run in and runners on the corners, Donnie Sellers struck out a batter on a breaking ball in the dirt, and Ben Breazeale picked off the runner drifting off first to end the game with a double play.
Wake Forest hits the road for the first time this weekend, traveling to Southern Cal for a three-game set from Friday-Sunday.
