BOSTON -- The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete at the ACC Championships this weekend. Boston College will host the event, which will run from Thursday through Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury Crossing, Mass.
Competition will begin each day at 11 a.m. The ACC and ESPN will provide coverage of the action from 5-8 p.m. on Friday and from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday on ESPN3.
In total, the Demon Deacons will send 30 student-athletes to the meet, 15 men and 15 women. The Deacons will be represented in nine events on the men's side and 10 events on the women's side.
Last year at the ACC Championships, the Deacon men placed 13th as a team, while the women took 11th.
The Wake Forest men return three of their four All-ACC performers from last year. In 2015, John Maurins and Simon Holden placed fourth in the shot put and the 800m, respectively. Michael Cyphers came in fifth in the pole vault. Then-senior Kyle Graves also earned an all-league honor by coming in fourth in the mile.
Current senior Sydney White was a first-team honoree at the event. She tied for third in the pole vault with a mark of 4.07m. A senior last season, Nyki Caldwell was the conference high jump champion.
So far this season, the Demon Deacon teams have been represented at nine meets and have tallied 34 event wins. Charlie Ionata has a team-leading five titles on the year, including last week at the UCS Invitational, where he set a new personal record with a toss of 19.96m.
A pair of school records have also fallen this season. White broke her own school indoor pole vault record at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet with a jump of 4.20m. Rookie Alva Hicks broke the women's weight throw record in each of the first three appearances of her career. She won the event for a third time and broke the record for the fourth time last weekend with an 18.99m toss at the UCS Invitational.
The final meet slated for the 2015-16 indoor season is the NCAA Championships from on March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
