Wake Forest Opens Four-Match Homestand
• The 27th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team opens a four-match homestand this week with matches against Louisville and No. 17 South Carolina. Friday's 6 p.m. match against UNC-Greensboro was cancelled and will not be made up. • The Demon Deacons will play their ACC home opener against the Cardinals on Friday at 2 p.m. and will host the Gamecocks on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Deacons have played four ranked opponents this season, but their match against South Carolina will mark their first home match against a ranked foe.
Last Time Out
• The Deacons suffered their first loss of the 2016 season in their ACC opener last Sunday, dropping a 5-2 decision at No. 21 Clemson.
• After dropping the doubles point, Joanna Zalewski and Luisa Fernandez won at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to give the Deacs a 2-1 lead. The Tigers closed out the match by claiming the last four singles matches to finish.
• Zalewski is now 10-0 in singles on the spring and has won 12-consecutive matches dating back to the fall season.
Deacs in the Rankings
• Wake Forest's 9-1 start has the team ranked No. 27 after starting the season at No. 71. The Demon Deacons now have their highest team ranking since March of 2009 when they were ranked 21st. They had an 8-3 record at that time.
• Kimmy Guerin is the Deacons' lone ranked singles player at No. 82. She is 9-1 on the spring, including 8-1 at the No. 1 spot with two wins over ranked opponents. Before suffering her first loss at Clemson last week, she had a career-high ranking of No. 77.
• Anna Ulyashchenko (No. 8), Emma Davis (No. 11) and Samantha Asch (No. 17) are ranked in singles in the Carolina Region. The Deacs' three regionally ranked players is a first for the team since the ITA went from eight to 12 regions in 2009-2010. Andrea Retolaza Andrade and Luisa Fernandez were slotted at No. 7 regionally in doubles.
Hot Start
• Before last Sunday's loss, the Demon Deacons started the season 9-0, marking the best start in program history. They passed their previous team record of seven-straight wins to start a season set in 2014.
• Five of Wake Forest's wins have come on the road. Of those victories away from home, three have come against nationally-ranked opponents.
Guerin Picks Up ACC Honor
• With two straight-set wins at the No. 1 singles position against Michigan State and Eastern Michigan, Kimmy Guerin won ACC Co-Player of the Week last week.
• The weekly conference accolade was the second of Guerin's career. She became the first Demon Deacon to earn the award since 2012 when she won the award in March of 2015. She is the first Wake Forest student-athlete to win the award twice in her career since Ashlee Davis received it twice in her freshman year in 2004.
Up Next
• The Deacs wrap up their homestand next Saturday with matches against Virginia Tech and Appalachian State. They will then play three-straight matches on the road.
