#DeacsInMadrid: Wake Forest Men's Soccer Takes On Spain
About the trip: From March 4 through March 13, Wake Forest men's soccer will travel through Spain over spring break, getting the adventure of a lifetime while being fully immersed in the Spanish soccer scene. During its time in Spain, the Demon Deacons will have the chance to see three professional soccer games and players, including Real Madrid C.F. with Christiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and many other of the sport's greats, before going to Barcelona to see F.C. Barcelona, Lionel Messi and others. At the same time, the team will get a crash course education in Spanish history and culture while touring each city extensively. To cap it off, the Deacs will have the chance to play three matches against trialist teams from Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and UE Cornella.
#DeacsInSpain: Day 6, Thursday, March 11, 2016
Wake Forest opened its first full day in Barcelona with a one-of-a-kind experience -- getting the chance to watch FC Barcelona's full training session. Sitting on the sidelines, the Deacs watched the team go for about an hour before having the chance to pose for pictures with Rafinha, Jordi Alba, Jeremy Matieu and others while manager Luis Enrique met with coach Bobby Muuss for a few minutes. To top it off, some Demon Deacons were lucky enough to get their hands on practice-worn gear, including tops, pullovers and goalkeeper gloves.
After lunch near Camp Tito Vilanova, the Deacs went to take on UE Cornella's 19 team. In front of a Wake Forest cheering section of at least 30 people, the Deacs capped competition in Spain with a 1-0 win over a strong Cornella side. Jacori Hayes scored the game's only goal in the first half, as the junior put home a rebound opportunity after Jon Bakero's initial shot was stopped.
Coming Up Next: Friday, March 11, 2016
With competition in the books, Wake Forest will have the chance to relax and enjoy the rest of its trip to Spain. On Friday, the Deacs will have a light stretch and jog in the morning on the beach before visiting the FC Barcelona museum and having the chance to purchase memorabilia at the store from the trip.
