WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Wake Forest men's basketball team nearly rallied from a seven-point deficit with just over two minutes to play, but fell short in a 75-72 first-round loss to NC State at the ACC Tournament at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Bryant Crawford led the 13th-seeded Demon Deacons with 19 points. Paced by 24 points from Maverick Rowan and 22 points from ACC leading scorer Anthony Barber, the No. 12-seeded Wolfpack advanced to the second round of the tournament, where it will meet Duke, the No. 5 seed, on Tuesday.
Devin Thomas picked up his 14th double-double of the season and the 35th double-double of his career with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
After a see-saw battle that featured 16 lead changes and 14 ties through the first 33 minutes, the Wolfpack went on a 15-4 run that turned a 59-55 lead for the Deacons into a 70-63 NC State advantage with 2:11 to play.
From there, a free throw and an old-fashioned three-point play on the next Wake Forest possession by Codi Miller-McIntyre made it a three-point game. After the Wolfpack answered with a pair of free throws by Barber, Mitchell Wilbekin closed the gap to two by making three free throws with 34 seconds to play, but that was as close as the Deacs could make it.
In a three-point hole with 17 seconds remaining, the Deacons were unable to convert on last-ditch shooting attempts to tie the game by Crawford, Miller-McIntyre and Thomas.
Rowan scored 11 of NC State's final 19 points over the final 5:12 of the game. The Deacs held a 34-33 lead at halftime. Neither team led by more than three points in the opening 20 minutes.
Miller-McIntyre and Wilbekin joined Crawford and Thomas in double figures in scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Crawford also racked up six steals.
NC State won the season series between the teams after the squads split a pair of ACC regular-season meetings with each team winning at home.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE DEVIN
With 12 points and 13 rebounds, Devin Thomas picked up his 14th double-double of the season. He extended his lead among 2015-16 ACC players by recording the 35th double-double of his career.

The Harrisburg, Pa. native led the team in 83 of his 125 games played in his career and finished the year with 296 boards, the 20th-highest total in team history.
