GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's golf team is tied for second place after the first round of the 2016 ACC Championship. The Demon Deacons shot 6-over during the opening day of the event at Sedgefield Country Club, highlighted by first round co-leader Jennifer Kupcho.
Kupcho, a freshman making her ACC Championship debut, shot a first round 66 and is tied for the tournament lead with Virginia's Lauren Coughlin. Her 6-under round sets a school record for the ACC Championship, eclipsing Natalie Sheary's 5-under first round in the 2009 tournament. Her round of 66 was one shot off the school record for lowest all-time single round, trailing just Michelle Shin's first round 65 at the 2010 Mason Rudolph Championship.
"Jennifer had a phenomenal round today in some very tough conditions," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "There were a lot of high scores out there today, but she played steady and made shots. It was really exciting to see her eagle the last hole. The rest of the team had pretty even scoring and there were a lot of positives to take into tomorrow's round and the rest of the weekend."
Kupcho was 1-under at the turn before shooting 5-under during the back nine. Her round was highlighted by a tap-in eagle on the par 5 18th hole.
"I was hitting the ball really well today," said Kupcho. "I wasn't aiming at pins, just trying to hit the ball to the middle of the green. I made two really long putts, which obviously helped my score. I mean I shot 66 today, but there are still two days left and I still have a lot to work on."
Fellow freshman Antonia Eberhard also had a strong debut, shooting a 3-over 75 in her first round at the ACC Championship. She is T-18th after the opening day.
Sierra Sims shot a 4-over round of 76 and Erica Herr had a 5-over round of 77 to round out the scoring four for the Demon Deacons. Mariana Sims was the fifth player in the lineup for Wake Forest, posting a first-round 79.
The Demon Deacons are 11-shots behind first round leader Virginia, who at 5-under was the only team to shoot under par on the opening day. They will play the second round with the Cavaliers and third-ranked Duke, who is tied with the Demon Deacons for second place at 6-over.
The ACC Championship continues Saturday at Sedgefield Country Club. Admission is a free and coverage will be available on ESPN3.
