GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team had a strong second round at the 2016 ACC Championship by shooting 3-under during Saturday's play at Sedgefield Country Club. The Demon Deacons were the only team to shoot under par during the second round and enter the final day at 3-over for the tournament, six strokes behind Virginia.
For the second consecutive day the highlighted of the round was a score of 66, as Sierra Sims' 6-under second round matched Jennifer Kupcho's first round. Sims was the only player to shoot in the 60s during the second round as her 66 tied the school record for low round at the ACC Championship set by Kupcho a day earlier. It was also one shot off the school record for lowest all-time single round, trailing just Michelle Shin's first round 65 at the 2010 Mason Rudolph Championship.
"Everyone played so well today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "It was exciting to see Sierra come back with a 66. That round has been in her all year, so it was nice to see it all come together for her today. She has been working really hard, especially on her chipping and putting, and today she putted lights out. It was good to see our strong finish. Toni (Eberhard) birdied three of the last four holes and Sierra birdied the last two. As a team, we had four birdies on 18. It was a total team effort and we are glad to be in contention and are looking forward to tomorrow."
Sims is 2-under for the tournament after her bogey-free round of 66 on Saturday. She is in fourth place on the individual leaderboard.
"I hit a lot of greens today and only missed two all day," said Sims. "When I hit them, I hit it close and was able to make my birdie putts. Everything was going right today."
Sims is one of two Demon Deacons in the top four of the individual leaderboard. Kupcho posted a second-round 74 and is in second place at 4-under for the tournament.
Antonia Eberhard shot an even par 72 during Saturday's play and is T-11th at 3-over for the tournament. Erica Herr shot a 1-over 73 in the second round and is T-25th at 6-over for the tournament. Mariana Sims rounded out the Demon Deacon lineup by shooting a second round 78 and is 13-over for the tournament.
Wake Forest's 3-under round of 285 was their best of the season, eclipsing an even par 288 at the Lady Paladin Invitational in September.
The Demon Deacons (3-over) will play in a group with leader Virginia (3-under) and third-place Duke (14-over) during Sunday's final round. Tee times begin at 9:20 a.m. at Sedgefield Country Club. Admission is a free and coverage will be available on ESPN3.
