WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Despite another strong offensive performance, Wake Forest fell to No. 4-ranked Florida State 13-8 on Saturday evening at David F. Couch Ballpark.
After being held scoreless for the series' first 11 innings, the Seminoles (23-10, 10-3 ACC) offense burst open for 10 runs from the third through fifth innings.
Keegan Maronpot led the Demon Deacons (21-17, 6-11 ACC) with two doubles and three RBIs, while Ben Breazeale, Stuart Fairchild and Gavin Sheets also had multi-hit efforts.
Florida State took the lead for good in the fourth, as they plated four runs and chased Wake Forest starter Drew Loepprich from the game.
Loepprich was lifted for John McCarren (3-2) after a leadoff walk to begin the inning. Although McCarren retired the first man he faced on a flyout, the next batter reached on an error and Florida State followed with a Taylor Walls two-run triple and a two-run homer from John Sansone to take a 7-3 lead.
Starting at designated hitter for the second straight game, Maronpot set season-highs in hits (two), doubles (two), and RBIs (three).
Right-handers Chris Farish and Garrett Kelly were effective in relief, with Farish striking out two over a scoreless inning and Kelly punching out three over 1.1 innings. Parker Johnson also tossed a shutout ninth, adding a strikeout.
Wake Forest scored first for the second straight game, plating two runs in the second on an RBI double by Maronpot and an RBI single from Johnny Aiello.
The Seminoles responded with three runs on four hits in the top of the third before the Deacs tallied two more in the bottom half on an RBI single by Breazeale and another RBI double from Maronpot to give Wake Forest a 4-3 lead after three innings.
After Florida State took the lead with its four-run fourth, the Seminoles added three more in the fifth to push their lead to 10-4.
The Deacons rallied back in the bottom half of the inning with a four-run frame which cut their deficit to two and included an RBI single from Breazeale, a bases-loaded walk by Maronpot, a fielder's choice RBI by Aiello, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch from Kevin Conway.
Unfortunately for the Deacons, Seminoles right-hander Jim Voyles came on with the bases loaded and a two-run lead and forced a groundout to end the threat.
The score remained the same until Florida State tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to give them a five-run cushion heading to the bottom of the ninth.
For Florida State, Voyles picked up his fifth win by firing 3.1 innings of no-hit ball in relief. At the plate, left fielder Jonathan Lueck added five RBIs, while Sansone and Taylor Walls recorded three-hit games.
Up next, Wake Forest concludes their series with Florida State in the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m. at David F. Couch Ballpark.
