Deacons Open ACC Tournament on Thursday
No. 28-ranked and eighth-seeded Wake Forest will compete in the ACC Tournament at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. this week. The Deacs open against No. 31-ranked and No. 9-seeded Virginia Tech on Thursday at 10 a.m.
The winner of Thursday's match plays top-seeded North Carolina Friday at 10 a.m.
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons ended the regular season with a 5-2 road loss to No. 38 NC State last Friday. Joanna Zalewski and Samantha Asch won at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, to give the Deacs their points.
Zalewski's win was her team-leading 29th of 2015-16. She also leads the Deacs in victories in dual-match play with a 21-4 record on the spring.
Deacs in the Rankings
Wake Forest's 18-8 regular season finish with an 8-8 mark against ranked teams has the Deacs ranked No. 28 after starting the season at No. 71. They climbed as high as No. 14 on March 22 to join the top 15 for the first time since April of 2007.
Kimmy Guerin is the Demon Deacons' lone representative in the national singles rankings at No. 64. She is 15-9 at the No. 1 position with seven wins over ranked opponents on the spring and had a career-high ranking of No. 44 earlier this month.
Doubles Success
Andrea Retolaza Andrade and Luisa Fernandez have 25 wins as a doubles team in 2015-16, slotting them ninth in a single season in program history.
Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko are 11-11 at the No. 1 position in dual-match play, including wins over three ranked tandems in the last month. They debuted in the national doubles rankings at No. 45 two weeks ago and are now ranked 56th.
Racking Up Wins
Wake Forest has 18 wins for the 10th time in program history, but for the first time since 2002. The Demon Deacons' seven ACC wins tied for their second-most all-time and matched their highest conference win total since they went 8-0 in 2000. Their seventh-place finish was their highest since 2007.
The Deacs started the season 9-0, marking the best start in program history. They passed their previous team record of seven-straight wins to start a season set in 2014.
ACC Honors
Anna Ulyashchenko earned ACC Co-Player of the Week honors on March 22 after for her efforts in wins against No. 38 Notre Dame, No. 10 Virginia and East Carolina. She was the first Wake Forest freshman since Ashlee Davis in 2004 to win the award.
Kimmy Guerin earned the same honor for the second time in her career on Feb. 16.
100-Win Club
With her singles victory against Virginia on March 20, Samantha Asch became the 39th player in program history to reach 100-career wins in singles and doubles combined.
Asch became the fifth current Demon Deacon to reach the milestone, joining Kimmy Guerin, Kasey Gardiner, Xue Zhang and Luisa Fernandez.
