CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wake Forest used a pair of big innings and held on late to defeat Appalachian State, 10-7, on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte.
With the win, the Demon Deacons (27-17) extended their season-long winning streak to six games.
At the plate, Nate Mondou, Stuart Fairchild, and Will Craig provided most of the damage for the Demon Deacons from the number two, three, and four spots in the order.
Mondou delivered three hits including a double, scored three runs, and also drove in a run. Craig also recorded two hits and knocked in three runs, and Fairchild was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and four RBIs.
Starting on the mound for the Demon Deacons, right-hander John McCarren (6-2) threw 3.0 innings of three hit, one-run ball to earn his sixth win of the season, tying him for the team-high with Parker Dunshee.
With Wake Forest off for eight days after tomorrow's game, normal weekend starter Drew Loepprich entered in the fourth, working 3.1 innings and allowing just one hit and two unearned runs.
The Mountaineers (11-30) struck early, scoring a run in the first on a leadoff double and an RBI single by right fielder Brian Bauk.
After failing to score with the bases loaded in the first, the Deacs broke through for four runs in the second, all of which were scored with two outs. Mondou delivered an RBI single, Fairchild followed with an RBI double, and Craig laced a single to left to bring home two more.
While the Deacs were held scoreless from the third through fifth innings, the offense erupted for four more runs in the sixth. Fairchild drew a bases-loaded walk, Craig plated another on an RBI single, and Kevin Conway delivered a sacrifice fly. Keegan Maronpot's pinch-hit RBI single capped the scoring and gave Wake Forest a seemingly comfortable 8-1 lead after six.
However, the Mountaineers tallied three runs on three hits in the seventh, benefitting from a hit by pitch and two Wake Forest errors to close the gap to 8-4.
The Deacons answered with two more in the bottom of the frame on a single from Fairchild that brought home Mondou and Joey Rodriguez, who scored three runs on the night, to push the advantage back to 10-4.
The Mountaineers scored two more on Grayson Atwood's two-run blast in the eighth before rallying again in the ninth.
Bauk's second RBI single cut the Wake Forest lead to three, but Fairchild threw a strike from center field to nab a runner attempting to advance to third and record the second out of the inning. One batter later, Rodriguez came up with a catch against the wall in the right field corner to seal the victory for the Deacs.
Tuesday's game marks the seventh time this season that Wake Forest has scored at least 10 runs in a game. The Deacs are 7-0 when scoring 10 or more this season, and now 9-0 on Tuesdays.
Up next, Wake Forest attempts to win their seventh game in a row on Wednesday, as they return home to take on Elon at 6 p.m. at David F. Couch Ballpark. After Wednesday's game, the team will break for final exams before starting an eight-game road swing.
