EUGENE, Ore. – The Wake Forest men's golf team concluded a 23rd place finish at the NCAA Championship with a 13-over third round 293 during Sunday's play at the Eugene Country Club. The Demon Deacons finish the tournament at 31-over, four shots from the cut line for the final round of stroke play.
"It is a shame for the team," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We just wasted a few shots each day and didn't convert our chances. When you do that on this difficult golf course, it catches up with you. We didn't get off to a good start, but the guys hung in there. We missed some putts over the final few holes and in team golf, those things add up."
Wake Forest was led Sunday by sophomore Will Zalatoris, who shot a 1-over round of 71. He is at 3-over for the tournament and will play the final round of stroke play on Monday as an individual. Zalatoris advanced as one of the top nine individuals on teams who did not advance to the final round.
Senior Davis Womble concluded his Demon Deacon career with a 5-over round of 75, to finish the championship at 5-over. He finished T-36th on the individual leaderboard.
Sophomore Paul McBride shot his best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 3-over 73. He finished the tournament at 16-over. Freshman Cameron Young also had his best round of the weekend, shooting a 4-over 74 to finish at 17-over. Freshman Kyle Sterbinsky had a 5-over round of 75 to conclude the tournament at 8-over.
"Next year the tournament will be at Rich Harvest Fields, outside of Chicago, another challenging course," said Haas. "We will have four guys coming back who got to experience this event and learn from it. I know it hurts right now, but hopefully this is something we can build on in the upcoming years."
Zalatoris will tee off at 11:40 a.m. PT (2:40 p.m. ET) for his final round. There will be live coverage on the Golf Channel beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET.
