WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf program announced its 2016-17 schedule on Thursday (July 28), featuring 10 regular season tournaments prior to postseason play. The Demon Deacons will play five events in the fall and five regular season events in the spring, including four tournaments where they enter as the defending champion.
"This is probably the most difficult schedule we have had in quite some time, but we feel like this team is up for the challenge," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We will have the opportunity to play a lot of incredible courses and see a lot of top teams. It will definitely prepare us for the postseason and hopefully bring out the best in our team."
The schedule again begins at Duke with the Rod Myers Invitational in September, where the Demon Deacons and Will Zalatoris won the team and individual titles last year. The tournament, which runs Sept. 10-11, is the same weekend that the Wake Forest football team opens its ACC schedule against the Blue Devils across the street at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Wake Forest hosts the third annual Primland Collegiate Invitational, Sept. 26-27, at the Highlands Course at Primland, a resort in Meadows of Dan, Va. This year's field includes both previous champions (Wake Forest-2014, North Carolina-2015), who are joined by Auburn, Georgia Southern, Kansas State, Loyola (Md.), Penn State, SMU, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
The Demon Deacons will look to defend two titles in October. The Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational, which Wake Forest won last year at Pumpkin Ridge in Oregon, will be held this year, Oct. 2-4, in Fort Worth, Texas at Colonial County Club, home of the prestigious The Colonial on the PGA Tour. Later in the month, Oct. 21-23, the Deacs return to the U.S. Collegiate Invitational at The Golf Club of Georgia, where they shared the title last year and Cameron Young shared medalist honors.
Wake Forest concludes the fall schedule Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Cypress Point Classic, held at Cypress Point Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif., annually ranked as one of the top courses in the world.
The spring schedule begins with the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, held in Los Cabos, Mexico, Feb. 26-28. In March, the Deacs will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for its first appearance at the General Hackler Championship in six years, followed by playing the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Fla., where the medalist will receive an exemption into the PGA Tour Valspar Invitational.
In April, Wake Forest opens the month with 3M Augusta Invitational, held April 1-2 in Augusta, Ga. The following week, the Deacs look to defend their title at the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, N.C.
The postseason begins April 21-23 as the ACC Championships will once again be held at the Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C. This year's NCAA Regionals will be hosted by LSU, Middle Tennessee, Purdue, Stanford, Texas and Washington before the NCAA Championship will take place at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
