BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams combined for 17 top-10 finishes on the first day of competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
The meet will conclude Saturday with events beginning at 11 a.m.
The Deacs brought home two event titles in Angelos Vasileiou and Kathryn Lazarchick in the men's and women's 3000m, respectively.
On the women's side, Lazarchick dominated the 3000m with a time of 9:41.44, over 20 seconds faster than the next athlete. The Deacs ruled the event, with all five entries placing in the top 10. Catherine Allen placed fourth in the event and Isabelle Harouche finished sixth while Sarah Fahmy and Kathryn Kenwood finished ninth and tenth, respectively. Fahmy, a senior, ran a personal indoor best with her 10:32.43 finish, replacing her previous time of 10:33.04 that she set as a sophomore.
Ellie Abrahamson set a new personal best in her second-place finish in the mile. Abrahamson recorded a time of 4:54.13, which replaces her previous indoor best of 4:58.76 set last season.
In the field, Amy Collins set a personal indoor best with her fifth-place finish in the long jump. She finished with a 5.57m mark which replaces her previous best of 5.47m set last season. Alva Hicks placed second in the weight throw with a best mark of 17.67m while Madison Bragg finished fourth in the unseeded pole vault after reaching a height of 3.30m.
On the men's side, freshman Angelos Vasileiou won the men's 3000m in his first ever indoor meet as a Demon Deacon with a final time of 8:41.99. Myers McKinney placed fourth in the event while Andrew Magiera finished sixth.
Mitchell Dyer finished fifth in the mile with a time of 4:14.05.
In the field, Charlie Ionata finished third in the weight throw with a best mark of 19.07m while teammate Kyle Johnson finished fifth with an 18.31m throw. Johnson was just shy of his personal best of 18.34m, set at the UNCG Duals earlier this season.
"We had a solid first day," said head coach John Hayes. "This meet is great as a 'rust-buster' as we just returned from holiday break. It allows us to see who has been working hard over the break. I look forward to the second half of the meet!"
Following this weekend, the Deacs head to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Jan. 18 and 19, where they will compete in the Tobacco Road Multis.
