CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team returned to action Friday with the opening round of the Ruth's Chris Lady Tar Heel Invitational at North Carolina's Finley Golf Course. The Demon Deacons, the tournament's reigning champions, shot a 1-over first round 289 and are tied for seventh place after the opening 18 holes.
Jennifer Kupcho, who won the event last year with a school-record score of 15-under, again posted a low number on the Finley Golf Course. She shot a bogey-free first round 66 to finish the day tied for the lead at 6-under.
Two other Demon Deacons also shot under par during the first round. Emilia Migliaccio shot a 3-under 69 to end the day tied for third, while Siyun Liu was 1-under to finish the round T-13th. Mai Dechathipat shot 83 and Monica Schumacher shot 86 to round out the Wake Forest lineup.
"Jennifer was outstanding today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "She had no bogeys, had six birdies and no fives on her scorecard. She loves this course. Both Emilia and Swing played very consistently and were so solid all day. Mai and Monica struggled on the front nine but played so much better on the back nine. We are looking forward to a better day tomorrow."
The tournament continues Saturday and concludes Sunday in Chapel Hill.
