Deacs Begin Play at ITA Carolina Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team began play at the ITA Carolina Regionals in Chapel Hill on Thursday.
With the Singles Main draw beginning on Friday, the Deacs began competition in the Doubles Main draw, while Mary Caroline and Courntey Meredith competed in the Qualifying Singles draw.
All three of Wake Forest's doubles teams got off to a strong start with wins in their first matches. Eliza Omirou and Anna Ulyashchenko received a first round bye and then took care of Charlotte's Tai Martin and Pierina Imparato, 8-2, in their first match of the tournament.
Elsewhere, Mary Caroline Meredith and Chandler Carter took down App State's Heidi Swope and Maria Zacarias, 8-3, before dropping their second match of the day to Clemson's Marie Leduc and Fernanda Navarro. Finally, Emma Davis and Courtney Meredith outlasted North Carolina's Marika Akkeman and Maggie Kane, 8-7. However, after a grueling first match of the day, the duo fell to Furman's Katty Weymouth and Danni Vines, 8-3.
In the Qualifyiing Singles draw, Mary Caroline Meredith won her first match over UNCG's Corine Blythe, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, but fell to USC's Nikolina Jovic, 6-3, 7-5, in her second match. Courtney Meredith was defeated in her first singles match of the tournament.
Up next, the Deacs will begin action in the Main Singles draw on Friday. The tournament concludes on Sunday afternoon.
