No. 15 Wake Forest Races Past App State

BOONE, N.C. - The No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team cruised to an 8-2 win over App State on Wednesday night in Boone.
The Deacs (7-5, 2-2 ACC) wasted no time jumping out in front, as Jule Grashoff scored in the game's second minute to give the team a lead they held the rest of the way. Wake Forest added four more goals in the first half and three in the second half to claim the victory. Grashoff added two more second-half goals to tie her career-high of three, set last season against App State (4-8, 1-3 MAC). Seniors Meghan Murphy and Shannon Eby contributed two assists each to lead the Demon Deacons.
In the game's second minute, Grashoff converted her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Minutes later, Wake Forest added to its lead on Emily Adamson's fourth of the season. Then, freshman Elisha Evans scored for the third time this season to put the Deacs up, 3-0, before the game reached the 10-minute mark.
Late in the half, the Demon Deacons netted their fourth on sophomore Jess Pianko's first career goal. In the 25th minute, the Deacs added their fifth and final goal of the half on Alexis Grippo's first goal as a Demon Deacon. Sophomore Kelsey Gill recorded her first career assist on the goal.
After Nicola Pluta scored her fifth goal of the season in the second-half's first minute, the Mountaineers put themselves on the scoreboard on a goal from Ali Williams. Wake Forest answered back in the 41st minute with Grashoff's second goal of the game and 10th of the season. Just over two minutes later, App State's Taylor Cimbalist added her team-leading eighth of the season. Finally, in the 60th minute, Grashoff struck for the third time to conclude the scoring.
The Deacs held a 25-6 shot advantage and a 10-1 edge in penalty corners. Wake Forest's 25 shot attempts were a season-high for the team.
Up next, the Deacs return home for a nonconference matchup with Richmond this Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
