LOS CABOS, Mexico – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Sunday at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate with the first round at the Querencia Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot a 7-under opening round 277 and are in third place after the first day of play.
Oklahoma State and Texas are the 18-hole co-leaders after each shooting an 11-under 273. The Deacs are four shots back of the leaders and four shots ahead of Baylor and Georgia, who are tied for fourth at 3-under. The tournaments elite field includes 10 of the top 30 teams in the nation.
Paul McBride holds the first round individual lead after shooting a 6-under 65 on Sunday. He is joined in the top 10 by Will Zalatoris, who is T-7th after posting a 3-under 68.
Lee Detmer is 1-under after an opening round 70, while Cameron Young and Eric Bae each posted a 3-over round of 74.
"It was a very solid round from top to bottom," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Paul and Will led the way. When your top two players shoot 6-under and 3-under, that helps, but all five grinded it out. Lee was solid with a 70. This course is tough so it is important to keep putting the ball in play."
The Querencia Cabo Collegiate continues Monday and concludes Tuesday at the Querencia Golf Club.
