MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team had a strong opening day of the General Hackler Championship, dominating the first two rounds of play at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club. The Demon Deacons shot 15-under over the first 36 holes and will take a 10-shot lead into Sunday's final round.
The Deacs opened the day with a 9-under 279 during the first round. They followed it up with a 6-under 282 during the afternoon second round. They lead second place Kent State (5-under) by 10 shots, while LSU (3-under) is the only other team in the 15-team field to shoot under par on Saturday.
Will Zalatoris has the individual lead after 36 holes at 9-under. He had a first round 68 before shooting a second round 67. Paul McBride is also in the individual top five, shooting 7-under end the day in third place. He had a first round 67 and a second round 70.
Kyle Sterbinsky and Lee Detmer are each T-19th at 2-over through 36 holes. Cameron Young is at 4-over after the opening day.
"It was a solid day by every player," said head coach Jerry Haas. "There is still a long way to go and a 10-shot lead can disappear quickly. The weather will be bad tomorrow, so we have to be ready mentally. It is always nice to start a tournament with the low team round twice. Our goal will to have the low round again tomorrow so it will be tough for anyone to catch us."
The General Hackler Championship will conclude Sunday with the final round at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
