WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's tennis head coach Tony Bresky and freshman Borna Gojo were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Monday, May 15, as the organization announced the Division I regional award winners. Bresky was named the Carolina Region Coach of the Year while Gojo was tabbed as the region's Player to Watch.
Bresky earns the award for the second time in three years, having also been award the honor in 2015. In his sixth year at the helm of the Demon Deacons in 2016-17, Bresky led the team to new heights, as the team won the program's first-ever ACC regular season title and climbed to No. 1 in the national rankings for the first time in program history.
Over the course of the year, Bresky guided the Deacs on a 19-match winning streak, the longest in program history. He coached four players to All-ACC accolades and led Petros Chrysochos (singles) and the tandem of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim (doubles) to national titles in the fall at the ITA All-American Championship and USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, respectively. Bresky and the Demon Deacons are the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, and are in the Round of 16 for the third year in a row.
Gojo earns the first Player to Watch honor in program history after storming onto the scene as a mid-year enrollee. Joining the team in January, Gojo has compiled a 22-4 record in singles play, rising up to the team's No. 2 slot by the end of the season. From February 25 to April 16, Gojo won 13 consecutive matches, helping him earn his first-ever national ranking in singles.
The native of Split, Croatia climbed as high as No. 45 in the country, and earned a bid into the singles draw at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. In ACC dual matches this spring, Gojo was a team-leading 11-1 and compiled seven wins over ranked opponents this spring.
As regional award winners, both Bresky and Gojo are now eligible to be named as national award winners, which will be announced on Tuesday, May 23.
