WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team reported for their first practice of the preseason on Wednesday. The team has just 16 days until their first game, on Aug. 26 at Iowa.
Jennifer Averill begins her 26th season as head coach of the Demon Deacons. She is joined on staff by associate head coach Rich Sutton, who is in 5th season, and Jamie Montgomery, who begins her first season as an assistant coach.
The Deacs finished the 2016 season with an 11-8 overall record thanks to a strong nonconference performance.
The team returns their top two goals scorers and their top three in assists last season. Junior Jule Grashoff and sophomore Nicola Pluta combined to score 33 of the team's 58 goals in 2016, while junior Megan Anderson led the Deacs with 11 assists.
Pluta earned All-ACC honors as a freshman.
After opening the season with four neutral or road games against Big Ten opponents, Wake Forest will open its seven-game home schedule with a Sept. 8 contest against conference rival North Carolina.
