IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team rallied from two goals down twice, but No. 11 Michigan scored the deciding goal late to emerge with a 5-4 win in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge on Sunday afternoon in Iowa City.
The Deacs fell behind 2-0 early, but answered with two quick goals to tie the game late in the first half. Then, after Michigan added two more to take a 4-2 lead, the Demon Deacons responded again with two straight goals, before the Wolverines netted the deciding goal in the 57th minute.
Jule Grashoff added her team leading third goal of the season in the first half, while Emily Adamson delivered her second of the season. Demon Deacon freshmen Anne van Hoof and Elisha Evans contributed their first collegiate goals for the Deacs.
The Wolverines did not waste any time, as they scored on their first shot attempt, which came in the game's fourth minute. Michigan kept up the pressure, adding another goal off a corner just seven minutes later.
However, the Deacs quickly fought back into the game, as Grashoff's third goal of the season cut the Wolverines lead in half. Then, after a flurry of shots from Wake Forest, Evans delivered the game tying goal off a rebound in the 23rd minute.
Moments later, Michigan retook the lead with another goal off a penalty corner.
In the first half, the Wolverines owned a 10-8 shot advantage and a 6-2 lead in penalty corners.
Michigan quickly extended its lead early in the second half, with a goal in the 45th minute from Emma Way. Once again, the Deacs fought back, as Adamson's second goal of the season cut the Wolverines lead to 4-3 with just under 20 minutes remaining. After quickly earning another corner, van Hoof delivered her first career goal to tie the score at 4-4.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines rebounded again, scoring the deciding goal in the 58th minute.
Although Michigan outshot Wake Forest, 19-12, for the game, the Deacs held a 3-0 second half advantage in penalty corners, converting two of those opportunities into goals.
Up next, the Demon Deacons will continue competition against the Big 10. Next Friday, Sept. 1, the team will take on Indiana at 2 p.m. in University Park, Pa. Then, next Sunday, Sept. 3, they face a true road test at No. 7 Penn State at 12 p.m.
