Duke Tops Wake Forest Volleyball in Five Sets

Wake Forest fell in five sets at Reynolds Gym
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Duke (10-8, 4-5) volleyball battled from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Wake Forest (8-13 3-6 ACC) 3-2 on Wednesday evening in Reynolds Gym. Both teams entered the contests even at 3-5 in conference play.
Caitlyn Della led the efforts for the Deacons with 14 kills followed by 12 kills from Myca Mitchell and Caroline Kuhn. Sophomore setter Madeline Holt posted her second double-double of the season with 42 assists and 19 digs.
The Deacon offense got off to a strong start with a .423 hitting percentage off 14 kills in 26 attempts to take a 1-0 match lead. Despite a 17-kill performance in the second set, Duke battled to even to match a 1-1 with a narrow 26-24 victory in the second frame.
Wake Forest regained the lead in the third set, defeating the Blue Devils 25-20 behind four kills and .500 attack percentage from Mitchell. Duke took an early lead, but the Deacons strung together a 6-0 run to take a 7-2 advantage. Duke answered back with a few runs of its own, but back-to-back Blue Devil attack errors sealed the set three win for the Deacs.
Duke's offense rallied in the final two sets of the match, with 20 kills in sets four and five, while holding the Deacons to just 12 kills. The Blue Devils again tied the game at 2-2 with a 25-18 set four victory and kept the momentum rolling with a .471 hitting percentage in the final set of the match to clinch the five-set victory.
Wake Forest will travel to Virginia Tech on Friday, Oct. 19. First serve is set for 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
