Hulda Arnarsdottir and Giovanna DeMarco scored to lead Wake Forest in the win over Clemson.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A dominant first half helped Wake Forest take down Clemson, 2-1, at Spry Stadium on Thursday night.
The Demon Deacons (7-7-1, 3-5-0) held the Tigers (9-7-0, 4-4-0 ACC) without a shot in the first half, and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 50 minutes.
Hulda Arnarsdottir finished off a cross from Ryanne Brown in the 35th minute to put the Deacs up, 1-0. Arnarsdottir hesitated with one dribble around the corner before tapping her shot into the right corner of the net.
Giovanna DeMarco netted what proved to be the game-winner just over three minutes into the second half. After a long ball from Kate Ravenna, Bayley Feist tapped a pass through to DeMarco, who snuck behind the defense and beat the keeper to make the score 2-0.
After being out-shot 13-0 at that point, Clemson's offense clicked on after that and led in shots the rest of the way, 9-3. Miranda Weslake hit the crossbar for the Tigers in the 65th minute before assisting on a goal in the 76th minute. Weslake sent in a header which deflected off a teammate to Julie Mackin, who scored on a header to cut the Tiger deficit to 2-1.
Clemson took three more shots in the final 13 minutes but the Deacon defense stood strong to seal the win.
Nonie Frishette made a pair of saves to earn the victory in goal, while Sandy MacIver made five saves in the loss for Clemson.
Abby McNamara paced the Deacon offense for much of the game, totaling a career-high six shots, four of them on target.
Wake Forest is set for its home finale on Sunday, playing host to Syracuse at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
