Syracuse Snaps No. 1 Wake Forest's Streaks

10/5/2018 9:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer

The Orange scored twice in the second half to defeat Wake Forest, 2-0.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse scored twice in the second half to hand No. 1 Wake Forest its first loss of the season, 2-0, at SU Soccer Stadium on Friday night.

The Orange (5-4-1, 1-3-0 ACC) snap several of the Demon Deacons' (11-1-0, 4-1-0 ACC) streaks.

Wake Forest's 11-game winning streak to start the year was the second-longest in program history. It also ends Wake Forest's undefeated streak against ACC opponents (23 games) and on the road (12 games), both of which lasted more than two years since a defeat at Clemson in September 2016.

The Deacs had the first dangerous chance of the game in the 56th minute, when a laser of a shot from Bruno Lapa appeared headed towards an upper-corner, but SU keeper Hendrik Hilpert made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

In the 65th minute, Ryan Raposo sent Hilli Goldhar behind the Wake Forest defense. Goldhar chipped it over Andreu Cases Mundet's head and into the back of the net.

Three minutes later, Syracuse's Tajon Buchanan was handed a straight red card and the Orange played a man down the remainder of the game.

Wake Forest took three shots and two corners over the next few minutes, eventually subbing out a defender to push numbers forward. After that sub, a turnover sent John-Austin Ricks on a breakaway, and he beat Cases Mundet 1v1 to push the lead to 2-0 in the 84th minute.

Shots were even at 8-8. Wake Forest had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, but Hilpert saved all five Wake Forest attempts to earn the shutout. It marks the first time this season the Deacs scored less than two goals.

Wake Forest returns to action on Tuesday, playing host to High Point on ACC Network Extra at 7 p.m.
