Omir Fernandez scored twice as the Deacs handed the Panthers their second loss of the season.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 2 Wake Forest posted a dominant second-half effort in a 4-2 victory over High Point at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night.
Omir Fernandez scored twice as the Demon Deacons (12-1-0) handed the Panthers (10-2-0) just their second loss of the season, while Machop Chol added a goal and assist.
The Deacs jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart. Chol delivered a cross from the right side to Fernandez, who knocked a one-timer past the keeper in the 21st minute.
In the 23rd minute, Aristotle Zarris doubled the lead. Eddie Folds found Fernandez at the top of the box, who dished it to Zarris for a far-post, left-footed finish to make the score 2-0.
High Point responded with back-to-back goals of its own to knot the game at 2-2 heading into the half. On a counter-attack, Tony Pineda found Siggi Benonysson for the finish in the 31st minute. Pineda scored a goal of his own in the 36th minute, putting away a header off assists from Benonysson and Jonathan Bolanos.
"The first half wasn't that bad. The transition goal was ridiculous, it can't happen. The set piece, it was a soft foul on our part," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "If you take out a couple of those mistakes — and I know they're big because they cost us goals — it was a really good performance."
Chol sparked a strong second half for the Deacon offense. In the 64th minute, he intercepted a pass behind the HPU defense, dribbled around the keeper and tapped it in for the game-winner.
Fernandez added his second goal of the night at the 78:00 mark. Koby Carr beat a defender along the right side and sent a cross into the box for the one-timer finish.
Wake Forest held a 16-6 advantage in shots, including 9-2 in the second half, and took seven corner kicks without conceding any.
Andreu Cases Mundet made a pair of saves for the Deacs in between the posts.
Wake Forest is back in action as part of a doubleheader on Friday night. The women's soccer team kicks off at 5 p.m. against Louisville and the men play at 8 p.m. against Boston College. Both games will air live on RSN and will be the Genna Wiley Memorial Match as the Deacs continue the fight against breast cancer — Genna passed away three days after the 2007 national championship and was the wife of former Deacon athletic trainer Steve Wiley.
