Volleyball Drops in Four to Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, IND. – Wake Forest volleyball (6-11, 1-4 ACC) fell to Notre Dame on the road 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 17-25, 20-25) on Friday night at Purcell Pavilion. Myca Mitchell was the team's kill leader with 15, while Caitlyn Della added 10.
After dropping the first set, the Deacons rallied back to even the match at 1-1, as both team traded 25-17 set wins. Wake Forest posted just a .029 attack percentage in the first frame, but found its footing to answer back with a match-high 16 kills and .256 attack percentage in the second set and hold the Irish to a match-low 11 kills and .089 hitting percentage. Mitchell led the Deacs with five kills in the set and the team recorded four blocks led by Olivia Saunders.
The Irish (10-5, 4-1 ACC) jumped back in front with yet another 25-17 decision in the third set as they posted 17 kills on 58 attempts. Mitchell notched four kills in the frame, while Della and Caroline Kuhn each added two.
Notre Dame clinched its fourth ACC victory of the season in the fourth set, hitting .317 with 16 kills and only three errors in 41 attempts. The final set featured eight tied scores and four lead changes. The Deacons rallied and went on a 4-0 run midway through the fourth set to take a 17-16 lead. The Irish answered back with three points of their own to regain the lead and went on a 9-3 run to close out the set.
Sophomore setter Madeline holt recorded the first double-double of the season, leading the Deacons in both digs (23) and assists (38). Saunders paced the team with four assisted blocks and one solo stop.
Up next, the Deacons travel to Louisville, Ky., to face the No. 25 Cardinals on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.
