Grashoff Sets Career-High, Deacons Down Appalachian State, 8-3

10/7/2018 3:40:00 PM | Field Hockey

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Jule Grashoff notched a career-high four goals as Wake Forest field hockey (7-6) defeated Appalachian State (4-10) 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

Its eight goals scored is the most in a game this season for Wake Forest. The last time the Deacons scored eight times in a match was last season, also against Appalachian State, when Wake Forest won 8-2

Freshman Laia Vancells found Grashoff for the first time in the game in the seventh minute as Grashoff worked her way past the Mountaineer goalkeeper from the left side of the net. Jess Pianko followed in the 25th minute with her first goal of the season off a rebound as the Deacons took a 2-0 lead.

Seniors Veerle Bos and Megan Anderson executed a play at the net perfectly, as Bos hit a missile to Anderson from the top of the circle and Anderson dodged a few Appalachian State defenders to record her fourth goal of the season. Anderson, who leads the NCAA in assists per game, notched three more assists in the Deacons' win.

Anderson set up three great plays out of the break, first finding Grashoff just two minutes into the second period. Grashoff scored her second goal of the game and ninth of the season. At the 44-minute mark, Anderson found Bos on the right side of the goal as Bos helped the Deacons to a 5-0 lead. Anderson continued to set up scores for Wake Forest as she fed Grashoff for the hat trick in the 42nd-minute off a penalty corner, giving the Deacons a 6-0 advantage.

Appalachian State cut into Wake Forest's lead in the 45th minute as Melissa Nobile scored her fourth goal of the year on the assist from Ali Williams on the penalty corner. The Deacons answered back just minutes later as Kelsey Gill notched her second goal of the season in the 48th minute of play.

Grashoff posted her fourth goal of the game on a fast break, taking the ball down the field and working past Appalachian State defenders to put Wake Forest up 8-1.

The Mountaineers rallied late, posting two goals in the final five minutes of play off a penalty corner and a rebound before the clock hit zero to give Wake Forest its seventh win of the season.

Isla Bint made the start in the net for the Deacons and earned the win with one save, before senior Cat O'Connor entered in the second half. Wake Forest out-shot the Mountaineers 16-6 and put 11 shots on goal while the defense held Appalachian State to just four shots on target.

Up next, the Deacons welcome New Hampshire to Kentner Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. The game was rescheduled from earlier in the season due to Hurricane Florence. Wake Forest will continue its three-game home stand as it hosts ACC opponent Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
