Deacs Sweep Washington in ITA Opener

SEATTLE, Wash. – The top-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team began its march at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in convincing fashion Friday (Feb. 16) evening, sweeping Washington, the tournament hosts, 4-0.
With the victory, the Demon Deacons (6-0) advance to the quarterfinals where they will face the winner of Southern Cal and Oklahoma State.
Wake Forest was pushed to the wire in doubles play, needing a late victory at the No. 2 doubles position to seal the point. Petros Chrysochos and Bar Botzer put the Deacs ahead with a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot before Washington (6-2) evened the field with a 6-4 victory in the top doubles spot. Borna Gojo and Skander Mansouri clinched the point with a 6-4 triumph in the middle slot to put Wake Forest in front, 1-0, heading into singles.
The Deacs stormed out of the gate in singles competition, winning the first set on all six courts. Needing only three victories to clinch the match, Christian Seraphim, Julian Zlobinsky and Botzer were the first three to accomplish the task.
Seraphim, who was making his spring singles debut, quickly put the Deacs ahead 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 spot. Moments later, Zlobsinky put the Deacs within a point of clinching with a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the No. 6 position.
Bozter sealed the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the No. 4 position. Chrysochos had match point at No. 2 singles when play was stopped while Gojo and Mansouri needed one more game to clinch their matches when play was abandoned.
Wake Forest's quarterfinal match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Feb. 17.
