WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The top-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis swept No. 7 Illinois, 4-0, Tuesday (March 20) afternoon in a battle between top-10 teams.
Despite temperatures in the low 40s and gusts reaching 20 MPH, the two teams agreed to play the match outdoors.
The cold temperatures didn't slow down Wake Forest (12-0), who quickly picked up wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions to secure the doubles point. Ian Dempster and Julian Zlobinsky claimed a 6-2 victory in the third spot before the No. 2-ranked tandem of Petros Chrysochos and Skander Mansouri clinched the point with a 6-3 decision in the top court.
Wake Forest controlled the tempo in singles play against Illinois (10-5), picking up three straight sets victories to clinch the sweep. Zlobinsky made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. Borna Gojo, ranked 29th nationally, put the Deacs on the verge of winning with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 59 Alex Brown. No. 7 Chrysochos sealed things off with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over No. 103 Aron Hiltzik.
The Deacs are back in action tomorrow afternoon, as No. 18 Duke comes to town. First serve at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex is set for 4 p.m.
