No. 1 Deacs Survive Scare from Miami, 4-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Bar Botzer won a thrilling three-set match as the top-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team held off Miami's upset bid, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
With the match tied at 3-all, Botzer and Dane Dunlap were tied at 4-all in a decisive third set when Botzer picked up a crucial break to take a 5-4 lead. The freshman then served out to win 6-4 and preserve Wake Forest's unbeaten record.
For just the fourth time this season the Demon Deacons (14-0, 3-0 ACC) dropped the doubles point. Miami (8-7, 0-4 ACC) opened out with a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot before Petros Chrysochos and Bar Botzer topped the No. 50 duo of Langmo/Soriano in a tiebreaker, 7-5. Court 2 went down to a tiebreaker as well, with the Hurricanes escaping with a 7-3 victory to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
The Deacs stormed out of the gates in singles, winning the first three matches to take a 3-1 lead. No. 7 Petros Chrysochos topped No. 90 Christian Langmo in the top spot, 6-2, 6-3 before freshman Rrezart Cungu claimed a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 singles spot. Alan Gadjiev followed with a 7-6(1), 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.
Miami rallied, winning on courts 4 and 2 to even the score at 3-all, turning all eyes to Court 3 where Botzer and Dunlap were headed to the third set. Botzer had claimed the first set, 7-5, before Dunalp took the second set by a 6-4 mark.
The Deacs remain in Florida to take on No. 20 Florida State on Sunday (March 25) at 1 p.m. The top-20 match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
