BRIGHTON, Mass. -- For the first time since 1997, Wake Forest has earned shutouts back-to-back games thanks to a doubleheader sweep of Boston College by scores of 3-0 and 2-0 at Harrington Village on Friday.
Griffin Roberts and Morgan McSweeney combined to throw 14.0 shutout innings with 22 strikeouts, while Rayne Supple earned saves in both games to lead the Demon Deacon (16-20, 9-8 ACC) pitching staff over the Eagles (12-21, 5-12 ACC).
The series finale is set for Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
Game 1: Wake Forest 3, Boston College 0
Griffin Roberts (4-3) tossed 8.0 shutout innings as he led the way in a one-hitter en route to a 3-0 victory.
The junior pitcher faced just three over the minimum, conceding a second-inning single, seventh-inning hit-by-pitch and eighth-inning walk.
He recorded at least one strikeout every inning, finishing with 11 in the game. He's struck out eight or more batters in all nine of his starts, and this was his sixth game of 10+ strikeouts.
Wake Forest got on the board in the fourth inning, fueled by a Shane Muntz double and Michael Ludowig single. Muntz scored on an ensuing error, and Logan Harvey followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Deacs scored another in the seventh when Bobby Seymour walked and came around to score on a wild pitch.
Rayne Supple entered in the ninth and battled back from a leadoff walk to retire the next three to earn the save.
Jake Mueller went 2-for-4 with a walk and stolen base to lead the offense, while Muntz, Seymour and Michael Ludowig had doubles.
Boston College starter Jacob Stevens allowed two runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings with six strikeouts. Chris Galland had the only hit of the day for the Eagles.
Game 2: Wake Forest 2, Boston College 0
Morgan McSweeney combined with Tyler Witt and Rayne Supple for the second shutout of the day in a nightcap with 15 total strikeouts.
Over 6.0 innings, McSweeney (2-4) set a new career high with 11 strikeouts, surrendering two hits and a walk.
He got all the run support he needed within the first five batters of the game. Patrick Frick singled and Jake Mueller walked, followed by a Bobby Seymour single to load the bases. Then, Shane Muntz hit what proved to be a game-winning two-run single to provide the only runs of the game.
Witt relieved McSweeney in the seventh and struck out three over 2.0 scoreless innings, also forcing a double play.
Rayne Supple followed with a shutout ninth inning to record his second save of the night - sixth of the season.
Boston College put the potential tying run on base with one out on a hit-by-pitch and Chris Galland single. After a groundout advanced them both into scoring position, Supple ended the game with a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.
Frick finished the game 2-for-4, while Chris Lanzilli hit his second double of the twinbill.
For Boston College, Galland had two of the five hits. Dan Metzdorf took the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs in 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts.
