UWHARRIE POINT, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team used a strong finish to the final round to set a pair of school records and climb to a third place finish at the 2018 ACC Championship. The Deacs shot a 14-under round of 274 on Sunday at Old North State Club, the lowest single round at an ACC Championship in program history, to finish at 26-under, the lowest tournament score at an ACC Championship in program history.
Georgia Tech was the wire-to-wire winner, taking the title at 29-under. Clemson was the runner-up at 27-under, one shot ahead of the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest was in ninth place as they made the turn on Sunday before riding a hot finish to the round. Over the final 10 holes, the five Demon Deacons combined to shoot 20-under par, recording one eagle, 22 birdies and just four bogeys.
"It is too bad that we don't have one more day, but I was proud of the performance," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Those final 10 holes showed an incredible amount of grit and determination. Shooting 14-under was not only the best round of the day, but the best the Deacs have ever shot here. We ended up a few shots short, but you have to be proud of the guys. We have a nice team and we are excited for NCAAs."
Paul McBride posted his second consecutive Top-5 finish at the ACC Championship, finishing fourth this year after a runner-up performance a year ago. He shot his second 66 of the tournament to finish at 12-under, four strokes behind medalist Thomas Welsh of Virginia.
Freshman Parker Gillam concluded his ACC Championship debut with a final round 67, shooting 32 over the final nine holes. He finished the tournament T-12th at 8-under for the week. Cameron Young was T-24th at 3-under for the tournament after shooting a final round 71. Eric Bae shot a final round 70 to end the tournament at 2-over, while Lee Detmer shot even par on Sunday to finish at 3-over.
"It certainly wasn't going well for us early," said Haas. "Lee was 5-over early and got back to even. Cameron was 3-over and ended up shooting 1-under. Paul was steady, chipped in for eagle and then played a beautiful front side. Parker birdied the last two holes to shoot 5-under and Eric only made one bogey all day. It was a great effort by all five guys."
The Demon Deacons will now await the announcement of the NCAA Regionals on May 2. The regionals will be held May 14-16.
