Top-Ranked Deacs Advance to ACC Semifinals

CARY, N.C. -- The top-ranked and top-seeded Wake Forest men's tennis team began its ACC Men's Tennis Championship run Friday (April 27) afternoon, topping ninth-seeded Virginia 4-1.
With the win the Deacs (23-2) advanced to the semifinals where they will face fourth-seeded Notre Dame at 2:30 on Saturday.
Wake Forest set the tone early, picking up wins on the second and third courts to claim the doubles point over Virginia (13-12). Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos earned an early break before breaking the final service game to pick up the 6-2 decision. Ian Dempster and Christian Seraphim followed suit by matching the 6-2 score in the third spot to give Wake Forest the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Rrezart Cungu, making his ACC Tennis Championship debut, quickly extended the lead to 2-0 once singles began, winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. After Virginia picked up its lone point at No. 5, the Deacs claimed the final two matches to seal the victory.
Chrysochos extended his winning streak to 18 matches, all coming in straight sets, with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot before Botzer won his 12th consecutive match to clinch the victory, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot. The final two matches went unfinished with Wake Forest leading in both.
First serve for Saturday's semifinal is set for 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Shawn Kenney will have the call of the action and will be joined by Prim Siripipat and Melanie Newman.
