WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Patrick Frick reached base four times in a 15-3 loss to Virginia at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday night.
The Cavaliers (28-23, 12-17 ACC) scored nine runs in the top of the ninth inning to quadruple their 6-3 lead over the Demon Deacons (24-30, 12-17 ACC).
Frick went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and two runs scored to lead the Deacs. Antonio Menendez, Bobby Hearn and Chris Farish each had scoreless outings out of the pen.
Andy Weber and Alex Tappen both homered in the first inning to give UVA a 3-0 lead, and Tappen added an RBI single to push the advantage to 4-0.
Bobby Seymour hit an RBI single to plate Frick in the fourth and cut the margin to 4-1, but a pair of Wake Forest errors helped the Cavaliers score twice in the fifth.
Wake Forest cut the margin to 6-3 in the fifth. Logan Harvey singled and Frick doubled, and they scored on a Jake Mueller RBI groundout and Chris Lanzilli RBI single, respectively.
Andrew Abbott then entered for UVA and held the Deacs scoreless over 3.1 innings, striking out six. That set up the big ninth inning for Virginia, which featured two home runs in the inning from Jack Weiller.
The rubber game of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
