WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest field hockey team began preparations for the 2018 season with two practices on Thursday at Kentner Stadium.
"There was a tremendous cohesiveness early on," head coach Jennifer Averill said. "We just need to continue to develop, fine tune, work on our competitive nature and keep moving forward."
With nine new freshmen joining the squad, the focus of the first day was to get the newcomers adjusted to the style of offense Coach Averill and her staff runs.
"We are adapting the new freshmen and letting them have a clinical presentation of the style of hockey offensively that we hope to play," Averill said. "We are managing ourselves and keeping it focused and purposeful, but also fun."
Last season, the Deacons went 12-8 overall and 3-3 in ACC matchups. Wake Forest advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons and made its 16th trip overall.
This year's team returns 13 players, led by five seniors including Jule Grashoff who led the team in both goals (16) and assists (14) in 2017.
Wake Forest will open the season at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C., August 25 and 26. The Demon Deacons are set to face Iowa and Michigan in the debut tournament.
