The Demon Deacons looked strong in their exhibition finale as they led the Appalachian State Mountaineers 5-0 before inclement weather caused the remainder of the match to be cancelled.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest field hockey wrapped up preseason play against in-state opponent Appalachian State on Sunday in an exhibition contest. After a lengthy rain delay, the scrimmage was cut short due to inclement weather.
Prior to the delay, the Demon Deacons were leading the Mountaineers 5-0. Wake Forest out-shot Appalachian State 18 to three. Senior Jule Grashoff led the team with two goals, while Eleanor Winants, Elisha Evans and Anne van Hoof each added one. Grashoff put up seven shots, while her two shots on goal were made. Megan Anderson and Alexis Grippo each had two assists and freshman Laia Vancells tallied one.
Through the first two 15- minute periods, Wake Forest maintained possession of the ball, not allowing the Mountaineers to get a shot off. Appalachian State came out after halftime with three straight shots, one on goal that senior Cat O'Connor was able to contain before the game was halted and eventually cancelled.
The Deacons open regular season play on the road at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Aug. 25 and 26. Wake Forest will face Iowa on Saturday at 2 p.m., and Michigan on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
