WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest field hockey team will enter the 2018 season ranked No. 14 by the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Reigning champion UConn earned the top spot with 979 points and 19 first place votes. University of North Carolina was a close second with 966 points and 18 first place votes, while Duke rounded out the top-three with 908 points and one first place nod. Four ACC teams made the top-10, the most of any conference and all seven schools ranked in the top-15. The Big Ten followed the ACC and placed three teams in the top-10.
The Demon Deacons finished last season at No. 12 with a 12-8 overall record. The team made its 16th overall trip to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons, but was ousted by No. 7 Maryland in the first round.
This year's squad welcomes eight new freshmen and returns 13 players, led by five seniors including Jule Grashoff, who led the team in both goals (16) and assists (14) in 2017. Grashoff was recently named to the 2018 Preseason All-ACC Team.
The Deacs will open the season on the road at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Aug. 25 and 26. The opening weekend will feature 14 matchups between teams ranked in the preseason top-25, four of which will take place at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. No. 14 Wake Forest will face off against No. 20 Iowa and No. 5 Michigan.
