Wake Forest Volleyball Falls to Syracuse, 3-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Wake Forest volleyball (5-10, 0-3 ACC) returned to Reynolds Gymnasium on Friday night following a five-match road swing. The Deacons fell 3-1 to Syracuse (7-4, 3-0 ACC) in the ACC home opener.
Syracuse hit .308 in the match and held the Deacons to a .173 hitting percentage. Three Deacons recorded double-digit kills, led by Caroline Rassenfoss with 14. Myca Mtchell added 12 while Caitlyn Della notched 11.
The Orange took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win in the first frame. Wake Forest out-killed Syracuse 11-9, but the visitors were more efficient at the net with just four errors against Wake's 10 miscues.
The Deacons stormed back to tie the match, taking set two, 25-21 behind five kills from Rassenfoss and three from Mitchell. The Orange took an early 4-1 lead in the frame, but Wake Forest won the next three points to tie the set at 4-4, before the teams rallied back and forth. Tied 16-all, the Deacons went on a 4-0 run to force Syracuse to call a timeout. The Orange threatened, but a service ace from Alysia Nielson gave the Deacons a 25-21 victory, evening the match.
Syracuse hit a match-high .393 in the third set as the Orange worked their way to a 25-17 decision to take a 2-1 match lead. It was a set of runs on both sides, but Syracuse broke away late taking a 25-17 lead after winning 12 of 15 points.
The Deacons tallied 15 kills in the fourth set, but the momentum stayed with the Orange as Syracuse notched 18 kills and just four errors on 39 attempts (.359). Defensively, Syracuse, who leads the ACC in blocks, posted 18 stops at the net. The Deacons posted eight blocks, led by Della with four and Caroline Kuhn with three.
Wake Forest returns to the court on Sunday, Sept. 30 to face Boston College at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra with Brian Rushing on the call.
