WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Behind 35 combined kills from Caroline Rassenfoss and Caitlyn Della, the Wake Forest volleyball team (6-10, 1-3 ACC) topped Boston College (12-4, 2-2 ACC) 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 21-19) on Sunday at a packed Reynolds Gymnasium.
"Reynolds Gym was rocking today," head coach Bill Ferguson said. "This was really cool. I have heard all of the stories and this is why you come to Wake Forest- to get in this gym and have it rocking was really huge."
Rassenfoss paced the Deacons with a season-high 18 kills while Della added a career-high 17 and seven blocks in route to Wake Forest's first ACC win of the season. Paige Sebesta and Olivia Saunders each added 10 kills as the Deacons had four players with double-digit kills for the first time this year.
"We talk about being 19-strong," Ferguson said. "Boston College committed its whole game plan to scouting Myca (Mitchell) and they did a good job and Myca kept battling. We ended up putting Paige (Sebesta) in and Paige got some points for us and opened things up. Our defensive and serving specialists all came through and we are starting to get Katie Moore back in the mix. We got closer to being 19-strong again. It was really nice to get this win."
Both sides remained evenly matched as the Deacons recorded 65 kills and .236 attack percentage, while Boston College tallied 61 kills and a .234 hitting percentage. Defensively, Wake Forest out-blocked the Eagles 11-6.
Wake Forest got off to a strong start, taking the first set 25-21. Rassenfoss and Della recorded nine of the team's 10 kills, while Della also added two solo blocks and one assisted stop. Wake Forest and Boston College went back-and-forth until the Deacons went on a 4-0 run to take a 17-16 lead. The Eagles answered back, taking a 21-18 lead, but the Deacons rallied to win seven straight points to win the set and take the initial 1-0 lead.
Boston College evened the match with a 25-20 victory in the second set. The Eagles recorded 16 kills in 40 attempts (.225) and held the Deacons to 10 kills in the frame and a .135 attack percentage.
Paige Sebesta helped the Deacons to a 25-19 set three win and a 2-1 lead in the match as the Deacons challenged the Eagles by subbing Sebesta in for Wake Forest kills leader Myca Mitchell. The Deacons posted a match-high 17 kills in the third set with only three errors (.452), while they held Boston College to 11 kills.
Tied 2-2, Boston College took the first four point of the fifth set. The Eagles controlled the momentum in the final frame until the Deacs stormed back winning five of six points to tie the set 12-12. Wake Forest went on another run to take a 15-14 lead before the Eagles evened the frame once again. Down by one at 19-18, Wake Forest battled to win the next three points, clinching the victory at 21-19.
