No. 1 Wake Forest Scores Four in Second Half to Beat Presbyterian

9/4/2018 10:15:00 PM | Men's Soccer

After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest found the back of the net four times in a 22-minute span to beat the Blue Hose, 4-1.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Top-ranked Wake Forest scored four goals in a 22-minute span of the second half to defeat Presbyterian, 4-1, at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bruno Lapa continued his impressive start to the season with a two-goal, one-assist effort. Through four games he already has 14 points on five goals and four assists, including back-to-back multi-goal games to lead the Demon Deacon (4-0-0) offense.

After a scoreless opening half, Lapa checked back into the game in the 60th minute and recorded an assist less than a minute later. From the right side of the box, Justin McMaster beat the keeper to the far post to make the score 1-0 after assists from Lapa and Alistair Johnston.

Lapa added a goal of his own less than three minutes later. A Blue Hose (0-4-0) defender tapped the ball away from a Wake Forest attacker, but it went right to Bruno Lapa who unleashed a blistering shot from 25 yards out past the keeper.

Presbyterian got on the board in the 74th minute. A defensive miscue was sent into the box by Andrew Miller-Bell to Sergio Pinto, who tapped it to Clement Vannier for the finish.

"We just kept at it," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I was proud of the guys for bouncing back after conceding a soft goal. Coming back right away and scoring the third goal was huge."

Wake Forest got that goal back less than three minutes later. Johnston sent a long ball down the left sideline to Chol, who delivered a cross through the box to Omir Fernandez, who scored for his second goal of the year.

In the 83rd minute, Lapa stole the ball away from a defender and scored from 10 yards out to cap off the scoring.

Andreu Cases Mundet made three saves, earning the win between the posts. The Deacs had a 23-8 advantage in shots, including 14-4 in the second half, as well as an 8-0 margin in corner kicks.

The game was delayed an hour due to lightning in the area.

"I didn't say a word to them in the locker room," Muuss added. "We were delayed on Saturday. We lost this same game last year after a rain delay in our first midweek game [to Georgia State]. All week, we were focused on not having a let-up. If you get out-performed that's one thing, but I wanted our guys to perform tonight. There are still things we need to get better at if we want to beat a good NC State team."
