Field Hockey Falls Short Against No. 13 Boston College

9/7/2018 11:37:00 PM | Field Hockey

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS – No. 13 Boston College (2-2, 1-0 ACC) prevailed in double overtime, defeating Wake Forest (1-4, 0-1 ACC) 4-3 in the first ACC contest of the season.

The Eagles struck early, taking a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match as Lucy Lytle scored from the top of the circle for her first goal of the year. For the Deacons, Jule Grashoff answered back with her third goal in the 24th-minute off a penalty corner with assists from Megan Anderson and Veerle Bos.

Both teams found the back of the net twice in the second half. Wake Forest led-off with back-to-back goals just two minutes apart to take a convincing 3-1 lead. Freshman Eleanor Winants scored the first goal out of the break, the first of her career, with an unassisted tip-in. Anne van Hoof followed with a goal off a penalty corner. Anderson picked up her second assist of the match while Alexis Grippo added one.

Just minutes later, Boston College cut the deficit to one as Brooke Matherson tallied her third goal of the season with Lytle on the assist in the 54th-minute. The match became gridlocked at 3-3 as the Eagles drove a ball past keeper Cat O'Connor on a fast-break tip-in.

Wake Forest did not attempt any shots in the first overtime period, while Boston College attempted five. However, O'Connor made two saves to stretch the match to double overtime.

The Eagles capitalized on their opportunity with a penalty corner in the 84th-minute of play as Fredrique Haverhals scored off the rebound, giving the 13th-ranked Eagles the slight 4-3 advantage over the Deacons.

Wake only attempted six shots in the match, but all three of the Deacon's shots on target resulted in goals. The Eagles took advantage of their possessions with 19 shots and 12 on target, sealing the narrow 4-3 victory as the Deacs dropped to 1-4 on the season.

Wake Forest will conclude its six-match road swing against Northeastern on Sunday at noon.
